If you are looking for a perfect place for a family rest you should go directly to the Popeye’s Village, one of the major tourist spots on Malta. This place was built in 1980 by Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Production as decorations for Popeye the Sailor movie starring Robin Williams. After the shooting was finished this beautiful place remained as a family park to bring joy to children and adults.
The movie, based on Elzie Segar’s comic stories, tells us about the sailor Popeye who came to Sweethaven Village in search for his father lost long time ago. The wonderful place of Anchor Bay located two miles from the Mellieha Village was chosen as the best location for setting the fictional village.
Construction works started from paving the road to provide an access to the shooting campus from the land. In only 7 month a real village with 19 wooden houses was raised by a relatively small group of 165 workers. A great work was done to create the Village. Since Malta has no forests and all the buildings were supposed to be wooden, the materials were brought there from Netherlands and Canada. 8 tons of nails were used to fix the wooden logs and 2000 gallons of paint were used to make the building similar to a cartoon picture. Moreover, a 200 foot breakwater was built in the mouth of Anchor Bay to protect the decorations from high seas.
Nowadays, major part of entertainment is devoted to the famous Sailor and other heroes of the story. All the coming tourists will be met by Popeye and Olive Oyl, Swee’Pea, Wimpy and Bluto. Walking around the Village its guests can visit Popeye’s Cabin and Olive Oyl’s house and witness these heroes' daily living. In Bluto’s House guests will find a room of memories filled with various photos and information related to the movie. The buildings of Post Office, Bakery, Shoemaker and other houses with various interiors and exhibits will also welcome all the curious ones. Besides, tourists can also enjoy some other entertainment, like balloon modeling, face painting, storytelling, and barbeques. In December a Christmas Parade is held for children and they can visit Santa’s toy town.
The Popeye’s Village slogan is «For the young and Young at heart». No wonder there is a great amount of different attractions for adults like water trampolines, swimming and sun bathing rest places, boat rides, food and wine outlets, and even mini golf fields.
So it doesn’t matter if it is winter or summer, just take your family and come to the Popeye’s Village and all of you will have a great time there. Don’t forget to take your swim wear as Anchor Bay is unbelievable place and it is hardly possible to refuse swimming in the sea or pools.

We (two adults) had a really fun time here. It felt like a waterpark for adults as there were very few kids. The film set is quaint and interesting and the restaurant is not the worst.

Nothing to do at 15eur entrance fee. Almost everything is closed for "maintenance", debris in the water, 20min for the visit.

We did NOT like it! Maybe in summer it is better. We had a weak experience in January 2012. Dirty, seedy and unprofessional. It just looks nice from the opposite side of the bay.
